Summary
The Indian land east of the Mississippi was wanted by the U.S. government. In 1829 there was a gold rush in the Indian territory. This made the land even more wanted by the U.S. government. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced Indians from the east of the Mississippi River to the west of the Mississippi River. The Cherokee Indians had watched many other Indian nations be removed to the west. The Cherokees knew they were probably the next tribe to be removed. In 1838 the Cherokee Indians were removed and an estimated 4,000 Cherokees died along the way. The Trail of tears ended in 1839.
