Native Americans and Westward Expansion

Indians of North America - English Edition

In the mid-1800's white settlers began moving into the Great Plains.  To ensure peace, U.S. officials negotiated treaties with the Native Americans.  Eventually, the government restricted the Native Americans to reservations only.  After the adoption of the Homestead Act in 1862, large numbers of settlers began moving west. Although life was filled with hard work, population growth brought many improvements and advancements.
