The White House

The Constitution, signed in 1787, created a unique and lasting government. The conflicts among the Federalists, who wanted a strong central government, and the Anti-federalists, who wanted to limit the power of the central government, led the framers of the Constitution to develop a system of checks and balances. This system divides power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. Additionally, the Constitution specifies how a person can become a citizen of the United States and lists the responsibilities of citizenship.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer revolves around the youthful adventures of the novel's schoolboy main character, Tom Sawyer, whose reputation precedes him for causing mischief and strife. Tom lives with his Aunt Polly, half-brother Sid, and cousin Mary in the quaint town of St. Petersburg, just off the shore of the Mississippi River. The novel takes place in the 1830's, approximately 30 years before the start of the Civil War.
